The “Internazionali d'Italia” is the most important Italian men's and women's tennis tournament, and is considered by many experts, fans and players to be the most important world tennis event on clay after the French Open. They are part of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 circuit, which brings together the 9 most prestigious tournaments after the 4 Grand Slam and the ATP Finals. Together with the already mentioned Roland Garros, which follows, and the Montecarlo tournament, which precedes, the “Internazionali d'Italia” constitute the so-called Slam Rosso, the triptych of tournaments on red clay in sequence, considered as the most important in the world on this surface, by tradition. There was another red clay Master Series tournament, the Hamburg Masters, which since 2009 has been replaced by the Madrid Master Series which was held two weeks before the start of Roland Garros.
